A note from Quincy

When my uncle passed away I reflected on his life and was struck with a deep admiration for his creativity and what he put into the world. And I vowed to reconnect with my own creativity.

When my father passed I knew what I could do to help myself cope. Painting the saddest days away made them feel so much more bearable - but it also made me realize that not everyone has the same available creative outlet that feels comfortable and easy.

Start Somewhere started when I realized that I was very lucky to have creative hobbies. As a kid who grew up painting, drawing, and constantly crafting – but then chose an uncreative career – I am still able to walk into an art supply store, pick up the few things I need and plop down and paint something - purely for the joy of painting, not to paint something good.

We are taught in college or during our first working experiences to focus and give all our extra hours to our career - and what is left is quickly eaten up by our phones and devices. Hobbies are forced out quickly. I have noticed in my circle of friends that we all seem to be craving the creative and the tangible. Hobbies that create, instead of pastimes that further drain us.

But where do you start?

My goal with Start Somewhere is to make it easy to start a creative hobby, and do it well and in good company. My hope is we can all put down our phones, and try something new or reconnect with a creative self long lost, alone or together!

As we launch I want to dedicate Start Somewhere to my Uncle Miles, whose constant practice of creativity I most admired.
